Ross Dependency

Postage stamp of the Ross Dependency, AntarcticaThe Ross Dependency is part of Antarctica. The region is shaped as a sector, originating at the South Pole and passing along longitudes 160° east to 150° west, and terminating at latitude 60° south.

Despite the Antarctic Treaty of 1961, which states that countries do not have territorial claims within the continent, New Zealand has maintained its claim on this particular region of Antarctica.

The Dependency is named after Sir James Clark Ross, who discovered the Ross Sea. Most of the region lies in the Ross Sea or the Antarctic Ocean; the actual land mass is small. Mt Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on the earth, is located on Ross Island within the Ross Dependency. The only permanent human habitations in the Dependency are scientific bases.

New Zealand Post issues stamps covering this region, many of which are quite attractive in design.
